Run an Airline Cash Flow: How Big a Reserve to Keep

Keep enough cash to run your worst route twice at a loss before you buy anything. A reserve turns a bad fare experiment into information; no reserve turns it into a stalled airline that cannot afford the fix.

Cash arrives in lumps

Income lands when a flight completes, not continuously. Costs land when you buy an aircraft, open a route or set a service level. That mismatch is why a player can look rich on the airline card and still be unable to repair a route.

The reviewed Lagos route lost $2,173 on one flight. Two more flights at that rate is roughly $4,350 of downside — a useful scale for a reserve on a small airline.

WORKFLOW

Setting the reserve

1

Find your worst route

Use the most negative per-flight result you currently operate.

2

Multiply it by two

Two cycles is enough time to notice and fix a problem.

3

Treat that as untouchable

Subtract it from your balance before planning any purchase.

4

Spend only the remainder

If the remainder is below the cash gap the game quotes, keep saving.

The order of spending

Repair first, expand second, decorate last. Repairs are reversible and cheap; expansion is irreversible and expensive. Cosmetics are permanent but do not affect the route result.

If a purchase would drop you below the reserve, the honest answer is to keep flying the routes you have. That is slower but it preserves the ability to react.

QUICK ANSWERS

Cash questions

How much cash does a new airline start with?

The starting balance is not published. The only official cash figure is the Starter Pack's $175,000, which is an optional purchase and not a default.

Can cash go negative?

The reviewed sessions never showed a negative balance, so the failure state is unknown. Assume the game blocks purchases rather than letting the balance go below zero.

Should I buy the Airline Expansion Pack?

Its description promises extra cash and exclusive rewards but does not state amounts. Without a published figure it cannot be compared on value; treat it as a convenience purchase.

Is it worth saving for a jet early?

Only if you already have a route beyond your current aircraft's range. Otherwise the same cash buys several route experiments with a much shorter payback.
